I'd like to check this out in more detail, as perhaps Ensoniq improved the playback quality in later revisions or there is a difference because mine is integrated. I'm actually quite attached to the MIDI sound of it It definitely has issues with some games and EMM is creativf nasty caveat.
Ensoniq AudioPCI
Elite has some reverb and chorus enabled by default and you can tweak it with sysex commands. The 4-speaker mode is only activated by software supporting the DirectSound3D quadraphonic mode.
They must have been limited by the hardware. I don't really like AudioPCI that much. I reboot, Windows 98 has a "Found New Hardware" moment.

Their cards were very popular with PC OEMsbut their costs were too high and their musical instrument division was fading in revenue. I might have to try installing as a regular AudioPCI just to get the installer to work or try installing the drivers onto a Soundblaster driver.
